In October
2005, the adventure literally started from two foldout tables
at one of the locations for the annual Pilsen Open Studios. In
the following months we went on to open a small operation in the
back of a coffeeshop--very much like a stand at an open air tianguis hence the name. In December 2006 we expanded into our very
own location at 2003 S. Damen. We continue to be a modest operation, with a handpicked selection of Latino interest books in English and Spanish. We cater to bicultural and bilingual readers
and our bookshelves feature titles from U.S. Latino/Hispanic and
Latin American authors, publications by Latino presses and select
Spanish titles and bilingual children’s books. We also have
a unique selection of gift items including tshirts, handmade jewelry,
postcards and more. In 2007 we introduced a tea bar, a book
club, and we are working on bringing workshop programs for writers. Stay tuned for developments.
Our store
is equipped with free wifi, there are outlets and comfy chairs,
all you need is a laptop with wireless capabilities.

*In case you are wondering about pronounciation and meaning: tianguis
[tea-ahn-geese] A tianguis is a mercado or market in
Mexico. From the Nahuatl word "tianquiztli".
